Academically rigorous English language courses for students who wish to improve their English language proficiency for academic, professional, or social purposes.
(Cultural activities are included in the full-time program)

Benefit, Goal of this course :

To assist students in achieving the English language proficiency required to succeed in an American institute of higher education and in the global community where the ability to communicate in English may be considered an asset.

Curriculum :

Full – time study includes 6 courses/week

 

- level appropriate study in each of the following courses: Grammar, Conversation, Reading, Writing, TOEFL Preparation, ESL through American Culture

. For example:
Grammar (4.5 hours/week): Analyze the elements and patterns of the English sentence.  Recognize and correct sentence-level errors.  Practice grammar topics using all the basic language skills.

Conversation (4.5 hours/week): Develop conversation skills for everyday and academic life.  Enhance aural comprehension and practice idioms and usage through interactive exercises, individual student presentations, and small-group activities.

Reading (3 hours/week): Improve key skills such as identifying main ideas, understanding inferences, and recognizing organizational strategies. Use context clues and build vocabulary through readings from newspapers, literature and magazines. (Highest level – a literature based course– may be taken for undergraduate credit)

Writing (3 hours/week): Improve sentence structure, paragraphs and essays.  Develop clarity, correctness and variety of style in written English.

TOEFL Preparation (3 hours/week): Learn test-taking strategies, practice taking the TOEFL and develop the skill and confidence necessary to improve scores.  The student’s placement test score determines whether he/she will be placed in Tutorial (integrated skills for lower level students), preTOEFL, or TOEFL. An Institutional TOEFL is administered at the ELI at the end of each session.

ESL through American Culture (3 hours/week): Learn more about the USA by focusing on a specific aspect of American culture such as music, film, literature, or history.  Courses vary according to level, session, and instructor.  (Highest level, for example “Cross-Cultural Communication” offered in the Fall semester – may be taken for undergraduate credit.)
