With Reading classes, students will have in-classreading exercises and a personalized reading program. Students will not onlyread for pleasure but also for university studies. Exposure to a wide varietyof texts will provide the students with opportunities to find and select theirown materials as well as develop some personal preferences. In Composition, students will start writing some basicparagraphs through guided practices. Then students will learn to research,organize, and compose research papers. In addition to these core skills, students will also learn word-processing skills to prepare for university writingassignments. Accommodation
A variety of housing options are available
for ESLI students. First option is the traditional residence halls with either
single, double, or triples rooms (room and board). Along with the dorm life,
students can choose several meal plan options that are served in the Residence
Hall Dining Center (RHDC). Second option is the apartment style housing. These
village apartments (Oakland, Stadium, Goldfine) are available for 1,300
students. Four students are in each apartment, and students can choose between
cooking their own meals or buying meal tickets. Both residence halls and
apartments have professional staff and advisers who can aid students who are
having troubles.
Surrounding Area
Duluth is the fourth largest city in
Minnesota, and the second largest city on Lake Superior. UMD is located on the
north shore of Lake Superior, close to both the city and scenic lake. The
population of exceeds 86,000, and students can enjoy city life including restaurants,
shopping, and activities. Duluth has four distinct seasons that could vary
dramatically. Summers tend to be warm and humid but nice; however, the winters
in Minnesota are long and cold average temperature around 7 degrees Celsius.
Facilities
University of Minnesota, Duluth campus is composed of
5 different schools—twin cities, Duluth, Morris, Crookstone, and Rochester. Due
to the enormous size, the facilities of UMID are exceptionally noteworthy. UMID
has over 50 buildings on its main campus (244 acres). Other facilities include
the Research and Field Studies Center Clensheen Historic Estate, Lower Campus,
Lakes Observatory, and more. UMD is also a home for various museums and arts
centers including Tweed Museum of Art, Marshall Performing Arts Center, and so
on. ESLI students will have a full access to these unchallenged quality
