Students are placed in their classes based on the results of tests administered at the beginning of each term. In addition to scheduled classes, students have access to EPI's three computer labs (also the university's labs) during the week. All students have an e-mail account and access to the internet. TOEFL preparation is part of the regular curriculum. Because classes are held on campus, EPI students are able to interact with American students and to learn about student life.

EPI's intensive English program provides an opportunity for international students to improve their English language skills before entering a university in the United States. It is also appropriate for individuals who need English skills for professional reasons. EPI is designed to help international students feel comfortable and succeed in their new environment.
EPI offers five terms per year beginning in January, March, May, August, and October. Each term is nine weeks long, and each week students receive 20 hours of supervised English instruction. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 8:40 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from 8:40 am to 1:10 pm. There are five class times each day with three classes held each day: writing/grammar, reading/vocabulary, and speaking/listening.

Cliff Apartments have one bedroom and one bathroom, providing space for two students, OR two bedrooms and one bathroom, providing space for four students (two beds in each bedroom). Kitchen facilities include a stove and a refrigerator. These apartments are furnished and all fees for electricity, water, one telephone with local phone service, an internet connection, and cable TV service are included in the Cliff Apartments fee. Students will need to bring (or purchase upon arrival) bed linens, towels, a study lamp, cleaning supplies, and utensils for cooking and eating. Linens are available upon arrival for $35 and include a pillow, a pillow case, a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, a blanket, a towel, and a washcloth.
USC will help students with information on how to locate a suitable place to live outside the University campus (costs vary) if students want off campus housing.

Columbia is the state capital and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 129,272 according to the 2010 census. The city is the center of a metropolitan statistical area of 767,598, the largest within the state. The name Columbia was a poetic term for the Americas derived from Christopher Columbus.The city lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda and the Broad, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River.
