The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is a public research university in Baltimore County, Maryland. It has a fall 2020 enrollment of 13,497 students,61 undergraduate majors, over 92 graduate programs (38 master, 25 doctoral, and 29 graduate certificate programs) and the first university research park in Maryland. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Established as a part of the University System of Maryland in 1966, the university became the first public college or university in Maryland to be inclusive of all races. UMBC has the fourth highest enrollment of the University System of Maryland, specializing in natural sciences and engineering, as well as programs in the liberal arts and social sciences. Athletically, the UMBC Retrievers have 17 NCAA Division I teams that participate in the America East Conference.

If you drop classes or withdraw from the ELI after the first day of classes, you may not receive a full refund of your tuition payment.

Winter 2023 Drop/Withdrawal
Note that during the schedule adjustment period (January 3-6) you can swap a course for another course (for the same number of credits) without financial penalty. Please be sure to add the new course to your schedule before dropping the old one. If you drop a course during the schedule adjustment period and do not replace it with another course, you will receive a pro-rated financial refund based on the drop date. Please refer to the chart for percentages.

ELI students may live in UMBC’s campus housing. Living on campus is safe, convenient, and an excellent way to meet American students and practice English daily.
UMBC has three types of campus housing. All housing is furnished and includes internet access and cable television service.
Residence Halls (Dormitories):
Usually, younger students who finished high school recently will be assigned to a dormitory.
Features: Most rooms are doubles (two students sharing a bedroom).
Bathrooms are shared.
Utilities (electricity, heat, and air conditioning) are included.
Students must purchase a meal plan.
Price:
$3,658 - $3,783 for each four-month semester, plus meal plan (meal plan costs an additional $1,958 - $2,471)
Residence Apartments:
Features: All apartments have four single (private) bedrooms.
Four students share the bathroom, kitchen and living room.
Utilities are not included.
Meal plans are not required.

Only older students who have attended a university before will be assigned to WAA.

Surrounding Area
Baltimore is a city rich with history and activities with plenty to see and do. Located in the state of Maryland, in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, the city is close to a wide variety of locations and attractions in the state and beyond. Eastern Maryland offers beautiful beaches and ocean locations while western Maryland has mountains and plenty of open spaces to explore. If you like the outdoors, you can visit our state parks to go camping, fishing, or hiking.
Activity
The city of Baltimore itself offers a wide variety of activities for all interests. Locations such as the famous Inner Harbor offers restaurants, shopping and museums along with the National Aquarium. Baltimore is also home to great museums such as the Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, the Walters Art Gallery and plenty of theaters to watch live plays and music. Baltimore is also a city that loves its sports teams and is home to two professional teams, the Baltimore Orioles baseball team and the Baltimore Ravens football team.

Free university buses are available for UMBC students to the airport, train station, Light Rail station, downtown Baltimore, nearby neighborhoods and shopping centers, and six other universities
Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport is only 5 minutes from campus with shuttles running daily
