Since 1975, the LCC has provided intensive English instruction for international students who want to study at universities in the United States or improve their English language skills to meet personal and professional goals. Over 20,000 students have increased their ability to use English correctly and effectively at the LCC. This 13 or 14-week academic program provides twenty hours of classroom instruction per week for students who need to significantly improve their English to study in an American college or university, whose professions require a mastery of the English language or who simply desire to improve their English language skills. The program includes instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking, as well as grammar. Students are placed into levels based on their placement test scores. Each class hour consists of 50 minutes of class and 10 minutes of break time. Classes are held on the campus of the University of Houston, allowing students the opportunity to learn their way around campus and mix with American students at the university.LCC terms begin each year in January, May and September.
Summer II Program
For students who are interested in attending the Intensive English Program but are unable to arrive in May due to school or other commitments, the LCC offers a summer program beginning in late June. This program is a seven-week intensive English course with all the components found in the regular Intensive English Program. Students who would benefit by enrolling in Summer II include those who are:
*interested in improving their English before enrolling in a college or university in September;
*looking for a short-term intensive program to improve their English;
*planning to enter the LCC's Intensive English Program in September, but available to begin studying in June.
Summer II students may be placed in newly created sections or in existing Summer sections, depending on their placement examination scores and on the spaces available in each section.
Weekly Schedule
The Language and Culture Center has two class schedules: morning and afternoon. Since a morning or afternoon class cannot be guaranteed, students must be prepared to be assigned either schedule. Both schedules include 20 hours per week of classroom instruction.
Program Components
Each 13 or 14 week term includes:
One week of registration, orientation, testing and placement, 11 or 12 weeks of instruction, and one week of student activities, final testing and evaluation.
Placement tests are administered to determine where, among six levels of instruction ranging from beginning (level 1) through upper advanced (level 6), each student can make the best progress.
Small classes, averaging 12 students per class, are taught by instructors with Master's and Doctoral degrees who have professional experience in teaching English as a second language.
A computer assisted language learning laboratory has software to provide students with additional practice in basic skills.
University course observation (not for credit) provides the opportunity to sit in on a class at the University of Houston for one semester to experience the language and culture of a university classroom (levels 5-6).

The housing price includes a fully furnished and (most are, but some are not) carpeted room, all utilities, local telephone service, ethernet service, and basic cable. Also included are computer labs, laundry facilities, vending areas, and housing staff available 24 hours a day.
Many LCC students live in apartments off campus, sometimes sharing apartments and expenses. Unfurnished apartments rent for approximately $500-600 per month for one bedroom and two bedrooms for $700-900, plus a $100-200 deposit. A wide range of apartments is available in Houston, and prices vary greatly. Also, most apartments require renters to pay their own utilities (electricity, gas, telephone, etc.). Utility costs vary with the season, but the average is $100-200 per month. Distance from campus and transportation should be considered in choosing off-campus housing. Adequate bus service is available to most areas.

Activity
Conversation Club
The LCC’s Conversation Club is a fun way for students to:
improve their conversational English skills,
talk to native English speakers,
learn new words,
become more confident speaking English,
make friends with University of Houston students and other LCC students,
learn about other cultures,
compare social, cultural, and academic life in different countries,
and get to know the University of Houston campus.
LCC students can participate in small group discussions led by University of Houston students and can go on campus excursions. Conversation Club is open to all currently enrolled LCC students.
Each term Conversation Club’s discussion topics are different, but popular topics from previous terms have included holidays, academic success, body language, relationships, popular culture, campus life, food, art, and culture. In the past, Conversation Club members have enjoyed socials at the University Center, campus tours, playing sports at the gym, musical performances and plays, lunch at on campus dining facilities, tours of art exhibits, UH sporting events, and volunteering together.
Other activities at the University of Houston include:
LCC sponsored field trips organized to the Houston Zoo, art and natural science museums, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and other places of interest.
Over 200 student organizations on campus, reflecting a wide variety of interests.
Tennis courts, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, games rooms, and other athletic facilities on campus.

Getting to the school from the airport
Airport Pickup
We encourage you to arrange your own transportation from the airport. However, we can provide an airport pickup service on a limited basis with prior arrangements. Please email your request to lcc@uh.edu at least one week in advance of your planned arrival. You will be charged a $50.00 fee for this service.
Please note: we cannot provide airport pickup on the day of check-in or any day after student check-in.

You can ask at the airport about taxicab service and the Houston metro bus schedule. An express metro bus goes to downtown Houston.
The UH housing office closes at 5:00 PM on weekdays and is closed on weekends. If you already have a dormitory reservation, it may be possible for you to arrange an after-hours check-in. Otherwise you can stay at the University Hilton Hotel, which is located on the university campus. Hotel reservation telephone: (713) 743-2471. Please contact the hotel for the cost per night.
안녕하세요. 휴스턴 대학교 어학연수 프로그램 Language and Culture Center 수업에 등록하고 공부하고 있는 학생입니다. 가장 먼저 I-20 발급부터 F-1비자, 기숙사지원까지 하나부터 열까지 꼼꼼하게 준비하는 걸도와주신 해외교육 문화원 송과장님과 원장님께 정말 감사드립니다.
처음 어학연수를 가고자 결심을 하고 어디로 가야할지 고민하던 중 대부분 가는 캘리포니아주, 뉴욕주가 아닌 텍사스 주에 있는 휴스턴이라는 도시에 있는 주립대 휴스턴대학교로 오게 되었습니다.
혹시나 Community College와 university 의 어학연수 프로그램 중 어디를 가야할지 고민이 된다면 저는 university를 추천드리겠습니다. 물론 학비는 더 비싸지만 좋은 대학 캠퍼스 시설, 선생님들, 많은 다양한 학생들을 만날 수 있는 기회가 더 많기 때문입니다. LCC 과정을 등록한 학생들은 학교내의 행사, 각종 직업, 학업 세미나 프로그램, 도서관, 체육시설을 사용할 수 있습니다. 참고로 휴스턴대학교의 체육시설은정말 큽니다. 저는 저녁에 수영 수업을 등록하고 다니고 있습니다. 참고로 수영장은 휴스턴에서 가장 크고 좋습니다. 휴스턴대학교의 학교시설은 잘 되어있다고 보시면 됩니다. 또한 LCC 과정을 듣는 학생들은 다양합니다. 이번학기에는 31개의 나라에서 100여명이 넘는 학생이 있습니다. 한국학생들은 적은편이며 중국, 대만, 베트남 학생들은 많은 편입니다. 학기 스케쥴을 나눠주는데 한달에 한번 정도로 문화체험이나 할로윈 페스티벌, 견학 활동 등 액티비티들도 있습니다. 따라서 다양한 친구들을 사귈 환경을 충분하다고 생각합니다.
미국의 대학교는 9월에 시작하는 가을학기를 기준으로 새 학기가 시작됩니다. 그렇기에 대부분의 유학생들은 8월 중순부터 말까지 미국에 입국을 하고 체크인을 준비하게 됩니다. 저 같은 경우는 휴스턴대학교에 있는 Moody Tower 라는 기숙사를 지원하였고 기숙사 체크인이 LCC 과정 체크인보다 빨라 한달이나 일찍 왔습니다. 또한 LCC 과정을 듣는 학생들은 기숙사를 선택하여 캠퍼스 내에서 살 수 있지만 반드시 meal plan을 구매하여야 합니다. 여기서 문제는 meal plan의 선택권이 많이 없으며 unlimited이기 때문에 무척 비쌉니다. 미국음식이 입맛에 맞아서 하루에 3번씩 맛있게 먹을 자신이 있는 학생이라면 추천드립니다. 그리고 미국 대부분의 도시가 그렇지만 특히 휴스턴은 학교에서 좀 떨어져 살면 반드시 차가 있어야합니다. 대중교통이 그렇게 좋지 않습니다. 가려는 곳으로 바로 갈수 없고 2-3번 환승을 해서 가야합니다. 다만 좋은점은 휴스턴대학 학생들의 교통비는 할인이 되서 아주 싸다는 것과 다운타운은 train을 타면 20분만에 한번에 간다는 것입니다...따라서 학기 시작보다 한달이나 일찍 와야하는점, 기숙사 식당 밥에 적응을 해서 많이 먹을 수 있는점, 차 없이 학교에서만 생활을 하고 가끔 다운타운에 train을 타고 왔다갔다 할 자신이 있는 학생들은 기숙사에서 지내기를 추천드리고 그럴 자신이 없는 학생들에게는 다른 방법이 있습니다. 휴스턴에도 한인들이 많이 삽니다. 특히 한인들이 많이 사는 케이티나 벨레어 지역에 방을 잡아서 월세를 내고 중고차를 구입하여 통학하는 것입니다. 이런 정보들은 한인 카페에 들어가면 많이 있으니 찾아보시면 금방 구하실수 있을겁니다.
솔직하게 휴스턴에는 관광할 곳이 거의 없습니다. 또한 휴스턴 학교 캠퍼스를 벗어난 주변 동네들은 으슥하고 무서운 동네입니다. 그렇기에 영어를 공부하는게 우선순위가 아닌 놀기위해서 유학을 가려는 학생들에게는 절대 추천드리지 않습니다.
미국에 입국해서 영어로 수업을 듣는 것 뿐만 아니라 생활에 필요한 일들을 혼자서 해결하는 것은 처음이기에 쉽지가않습니다. 그렇지만 한국에서는 경험할 수 없는 정말 다양하고 좋은 것들을 경험할거라고 믿고 있고 영어실력 또한 빠르게 향상될것이라고 봅니다.
