Each of the 4 levels of the Academic English Program (AEP) correspond to a proficiency level. Following are the levels, a short description of proficiencies, and their relation to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
AEP 1. Low Intermediate: A student at this level can communicate on familiar topics and provide information with some success. Uses a limited range of vocabulary and structures.
AEP2. Mid Intermediate: A student at this level can express and support opinion and can handle a variety of uncomplicated communicative tasks with moderate success.
AEP3. High Intermediate: A student at this level can handle a variety of communicative tasks with success, although errors may be evident.
AEP4. Low Advanced: A student at this level can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. Can communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and if miscommunication occurs, can repair them.
Intensive Academic Study
In addition to expanding your language skills, AEP specifically prepares you for graduate study. You will be trained to lead and participate in seminars, work effectively in a team, understand complex, fast-paced lectures, write documented academic papers, read a variety of authentic materials, and give presentations.
Core AEP Courses
In order to quickly prepare you for graduate work in English, your classes will meet five days a week with daily homework. Classes meet for a total of 18 hours weekly. AEP courses concentrate on the areas of academic writing, listening/speaking, reading/discussion, and grammar/idioms. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students. We make every effort to individualize your learning experience.
Elective Courses
Our TOEFL and GRE preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking strategies. We also offer a Pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on stress and intonation patterns as well as individual sounds. There is a language proficiency prerequisite for most elective courses. Elective courses meet 4 hours per week for 7 weeks (8 1/2 weeks during the summer).Our current elective schedule for AEP students is Tuesday/Thursday 8:30-10:20 AM

Core ELP Courses
Writing (MWF 9-10:30AM) - Express yourself more effectively in academic and non-academic writing, with work on content, accuracy, and organization.
Grammar (MWF 11-12:30)- Increase your accuracy in spoken and written contexts, and learn grammatical structures common in U.S. English.
Listening and Speaking (MWF 2-3:30) - Communicate more comfortably and increase your understanding in a variety of settings, from informal conversations to formal presentations.
Reading and Discussion (TTH 1-3:15) - Improve your comprehension of fiction and non-fiction, and develop your vocabulary, discussion skills, and reading speed.

campus, residence halls or dormitories are available for you as an international student. These living facilities

Activity
ESL SOCIAL EVENTS
Services organizes many social and cultural events for our students throughout the year.
Social Activities - Our activities include TalkTime conversation practice, holiday parties, sports practice, craft making/cooking, and visiting places around Austin. Each semester our students are also invited to a program-wide BBQ picnic or bowling party and an end-of-semester reception with dinner.
Partnerships to Advance Language Study and Culture Exchange (PALS) – The PALS program pairs together international and American students at UT for the purposes of cultural exchange and to practice English conversation skills.
Texas Excursions – ESL students are invited to participate in International Office trips. These excursions are a great way to visit and experience some of the great activities Austin and Texas have to offer.
WHAT Weekly Newsletter - ESL Services publishes a weekly newsletter called the "WHAT" (What's Happening Around Town) to help our students know about events going on at ESL Services and around Austin.

Location
Getting to the school from the airport
The local airport, Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), is small and easy to navigate. The airport staff is friendly and eager to help you. There is an information desk in the Arrivals area of the airport that will assist you with any of your questions.
If you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, you will find that the university and most government offices are closed. However, most retail stores will be open over the weekend. If you arrive on a weekday (Monday through Friday), we invite you to visit the International Office (INT) and ESL Services between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The airport is located approximately 15 miles from the campus. Unfortunately, we are not able to make arrangements to meet you at the airport. Please see the transportation options below to get you to your destination.
Options:
Bus: Capitol Metro’s Route 100 Airport Flyer departs ABIA every 30 minutes. The cost is $1.50. This bus stops on campus at 2 locations on campus. The trip from the airport to campus takes approximately 30 minutes.
SuperShuttle: This is a shared-ride van service. The approximate fare from the airport to the campus area is $17 for first person and $10 for each additional person. Reservations are recommended but not required. Make reservations by phone at 800-258-3826 or on the Super Shuttle website.
Taxi or Ride Share Service: The fare from the airport to campus is approximately $30-$40.
우선 모든 점수가 5점이라 믿기지 않으실 분들이 많을 거라 생각합니다. 하지만 UT오스틴은 믿기지 않을 정도로 좋은 시설, 좋은 커리큘럼, 도시의 규모를 갖고 있으며 모든 면에서 미국 어학연수를 생각하신다면 완벽한 도시입니다.
수업의 질 – 배치고사를 3일에 걸쳐 응시하게 됩니다. 컴퓨터 기반 테스트 면대면 테스트 고전적인 종이 테스트 세 과정을 거쳐 가장 적합하다 판단 되는 반에 배치가 되며 모든 학생은 담당 교사들과 1대1 심층면접을 통해 배치가 이루어집니다. 수업의 진행은 한 반에 적게는 6명에서 많게는 10명으로 구성되며 동일 국가의 학생은 같은 반에 배치 되지 않습니다. 제가 있는 기간동안 한국인은 약 5명정도 있었으며 등급은 1단계부터 7단계까지 각 단계별로 3분반에서 4분반까지 나누어 집니다. 주립 대학교 부설 어학당 인만큼 모든 선생님은 충분히 검증 되었으며.
제가 가장 우려했던 학생을 외국인이라 생각하여 말을 느리게 하거나 이해하기 쉽게 말하려 하는 경우는 찾아볼 수 없었습니다. 물론 적응기간이 필요하다는 단점 또한 생기나 모든 선생님이 최대한 일상적인 속도로 말하려 노력하며 일상적인 단어를 통해 의사소통 하려 노력하는 부분에서 저는 가장 만족하였습니다.
학교 스태프의 친절함 – 선생님을 제외한 스태프는 대부분 영문학을 전공하는 대학원생이거나 ESL프로그램을 거쳐간 후 대학원 또는 대학교에 재학중인 학생입니다. 따라서 영어를 배우고 있는 학생에 대해 이해도가 매우 높으며. 비자문제 주거문제 세금문제 자동차 모든 점에서 학생을 도와 주기 위해 최대한 노력하는 점에서 저는 5점 이상을 주고 싶습니다.
숙박시설 – 학교가 큰 만큼 주변에 기숙사와 셰어 하우스가 많이 위치하고 있으며 가격은 월 600~900불로 다양합니다. 저의 경우 오스틴 웨스트캠퍼스 지역에 거주 하였는데 이곳의 평균 주거비용은 매달 약 700불정도 였습니다.
학교 내 이용 가능 시설 – 도서관, 헬스장, 긴급의료서비스(매우 중요), 오스틴 에서는 UT학생에게 많은 서비스를 제공합니다 항상 이용하기전에 UT학생증을 보여주세요
장점 – 미국에서 손꼽히는 크기의 대학교가 위치하였기 때문에 외국인과 현지인의 구분이 없다는 점이 가장 좋은 점입니다. 또한 도시 자체가 젊고 활발한 도시이기 때문에 모든 사람들이 친절하고 여유로우며 실제로 미국 부동산 랭킹에 따르면 오스틴은 항상 살기 좋은 도시 1위를 하고있는 도시로 알려져 있습니다. 오스틴은 미국에서 유류비 식비가 가장 저렴한 도시기도 한 도시라 학생으로서 생활비의 부담이 낮아진다는 점 또한 강점입니다. 게다가 오스틴은 많은 스타트 업 기업과 많은 벤처기업들이 위치하고 있어 각종 어플의 테스트 지역으로도 이용됩니다. 예를 들어 카쉐어링 서비스인 car2go나 fasten등도 서비스 하고있으며 각종 트렌드를 이끌어가는 점에서 미국의 역동적 모습을 배울 수 있는 좋은 도시입니다.
단점 – 오스틴의 경우 대중교통이 잘 되어있지 않습니다. 학교에서 지급하는 UT학생증을 갖고 있으면 버스를 무료로 이용할 수 있으나 대기시간이 불규칙하여 학기 초를 제외하고는 거의 이용하지 않았습니다. 만약 1년 이상 거주 하실 예정이라면 오스틴 북부와 남부에 위치한 CARMAX나 미국 판 중고시장인 Craigslist를 이용하여 중고차를 구매하는 것을 추천 드리며. 한학기에서 1년 정도 거주하실 예정이라면 오스틴 지역내 우버 또는 Ride Austin, Car2go를 이용하는 것을 추천 드립니다. 또한 오스틴의 가장 좋은 점이자 나쁜 점은 오스틴이 뉴욕이나 LA같은 메트로폴리탄급 도시가 아니기 때문에 인프라에서 부족함을 느낄 수 있으나 외부 인구 유입이 많은 오스틴 특성상 사람들이 친절하고 아무에게나 말을 붙일 수 있다는 점에서 영어학습에는 좋은 도시입니다.
저는 오스틴에 있는 다른 어학원에서 어학연수를 하다가 이번에 UT Austin으로 옮기게 되었습니다.
일단 미국에서 어학원을 선택할 때 생활적인 면까지 고려해야 할 부분이 다양한데 사람마다 기준이 다르니 잘 선택 하시는 것이 좋을 것입니다.
저는 뉴욕, 엘에이, 샌프란시스코, 하와이등 다양한 도시를 여행 했었는데 그중에 오스틴도 있었습니다. 그 중 제가 텍사스 오스틴을 선택한 이유 역시 다양한 부분을 고려했을 때 가장 적합했기 때문입니다.
우선 괜찮은 어학원과 그렇지 않은 어학원은 어느 도시에나 있을것이고 날씨와 안전, 물가등을 고려 하였습니다. 개인적으로는 추운것을 매우 싫어해서 따뜻한 곳을 원했는데 뉴욕은 서울보다 더 춥고 물가도 살인적이기 때문에 더 덥기 때문에 일단 날씨 좋은 계절에 여행하기 좋은곳으로 항상 생각했었습니다. LA는 너무나 좋은 날씨를 가지고 있지만 워낙 많은 한국사람들이 살기 때문에 영어보다 한국말을 더 많이 쓰게 될것 같았고 SF는 제가 가장 좋아하는 날씨지만 실리콘밸리의 발전과 비례하며 치솟는 물가는 부담스러웠습니다.
어학공부를 장기간 계획하고 있어 언젠가는 여러 도시를 옮겨다닐 생각이지만 우선 안정적인 미국생활 적응을 위해 오스틴을 선택하였습니다. Austin은 앞서 말한 도시들 만큼 대도시는 아니지만 텍사스의 주도로 댈러스, 휴스턴, 샌안토니오의 삼각형 중간쯤에 위치하고 있습니다. 덕분에 차를 타고 댈라스 3시간, 휴스턴 2시간반, 샌안토니오 1시간반이면 갈 수 있어 당일 또는 주말 여행을 차로 할 수 있는 장점이 있습니다. 차가 없는 경우에는 메가버스를 활용해 저렴하고 편하게 다녀올 수 있습니다.
사실 Austin은 음악도시로 매우 유명합니다. 한국에도 잘 알려져 있는 SXSW(South by Southwest)라는 큰 음악페스티벌이 매년 3월에 열리고 10월에는 'Austin City Limits Music Festivals'이라는 큰 음악 축제도 열립니다. 미국 뿐 아니라 세계 각지에서 엄청난 사람들이 모이기도 합니다. 이러한 큰 패스티벌이 아니더라도 오스틴 다운타운의 6st에서는 마치 한국의 홍대앞 같이 엄청나게 많은 라이브뮤직 클럽에서 다양한 장르의 라이브음악을 들을 수 있습니다. 매주 목,금, 토 저녁에는 차가 다니지 못하도록 길을 막아놓고 많은 사람들이 자유를 느끼며 즐깁니다. 그 외에의 시간에는 거짓말 처럼 조용한 도시로 다시 탈바꿈 합니다. 특히 안전은 미국 전체에서 항상 아이를 키우기 좋은 도시인지 살기좋은 도시인지 1,2위로 선정될 만큼 유명합니다. 6st에도 텍사스답게 많은 경찰관들이 말을 타고 다니며 순찰을 돕니다.
날씨가 따뜻하고(여름에는 매우 덥습니다.) 대도시가 아닌만큼 이곳 사람들에게는 항상 여유가 있습니다. 그러다보니 매우 친절합니다. 콜로라도 강을 끼고 있는 다운타운은 상당히 잘 조성되어 있고 도시의 느낌과 자연의 느낌을 동시에 누릴 수 있습니다. 콜로다로 리버에서는 카약등 물놀이를 즐길 수 있도 강을 수영장 처럼 만들어놓거나 여러개의 튜브를 연결해 지인들과 타고 강물을 따라 흘러가며 얘기를 나눌 수 있는 색다른 곳들도 있습니다. 공원도 굉장히 많고 다운타운에서 조금만 벗어나도 자연을 마음껏 누릴 수 있는 곳이 많이 있습니다. 물가도 비교적 비싸지 않은 편이고 자동차가 있을경우 다른 주 보다 기름값이 무척 싸서 매우 좋습니다.
단점이라 하면 앞서 말한 장점들로 인해 많은 사람들이 살기 좋은 오스틴으로 이주하고 있어 집값이 올라가며 렌트비도 많이 오르고 있는 상황이며 다른 지역의 어학원들은 비싼곳과 싼곳이 공존하는 반면 이곳은 일정하게 책정이 되어 있는것 같습니다.
이제 UT Austin에 대해 말씀드리자면 미국에서도 굉장히 유명한 학교이고 특히 오스틴의 다운타운 중심에 위치하고 있으며 엄청난 크기와 학생수로 아마 제 생각에는 오스틴의 경제까지 이끌고 있다고 보고 있습니다. 방학기간이나 학교가 쉬는날에는 차가 전혀 막히지 않아 더욱 쉽게 체감할 수 있습니다.
오스틴 어디를가도 UT Austin의 풋볼팀 로고를 쉽게 볼 수 있으며 자부심도 많이 가지고 있는것 같습니다. 처음에 적은대로 저는 다른 어학원을 다니고 이번에 UT Austin의 ESL코스를 다니게 된 상황이라 아직 수업을 직접 듣지는 않았습니다. 하지만 이곳에 와서 살다보니 당연한 선택이라는 생각이 듭니다. 한국에서 나름 알아본다고 알아보고 왔는데 제가 다녔던 어학원은 이곳에서 가장 오랜 전통을 자랑하는 사설 어학원이였으나 그만큼 시설이나 교육방식 또한 오래된것 같다는 느낌을 많이 받았습니다.
막상 어학원을 다녀보니 선생님들의 수업방식이 생각보다 중요하다는걸 깨달았고 수업시간에 배우는 영어보다 많은 외국인 친구들을 만들고 그들과 일상생활에서 많은 대화를 나누는 것이 회화에서는 절대적으로 도움이 되는것 같습니다. 그런면에서 제가 다니던 곳은 아쉬운 부분이 많았고 이곳에서 알게된 많은 분들의 얘기를 듣고 UT Austin을 선택하게 되었습니다. 아무래도 오스틴의 중심이 UT이다보니 장점들이 많이 있었습니다.
Austin은 미국치고 버스 노선이 많은데 (물론 한국과 비교하면 안됩니다.) UT의 학생증이 있으면 모든 버스를 무료로 이용할 수 있습니다. 차가 없을 경우 많은 도움이 될것 같고 기숙사 혹은 홈스테이 혹은 다른 친구들과 함께 주거하는등 UT근처에서 산다면 굳이 차가 필요 없겠다는 생각됩니다.
그리고 무엇보다 새로운 친구들을 사귈 수 있게되는 계기가 필요한데 UT는 이러한 부분을 적극 지원하고 있습니다. 어학원 내의 야외활동이나 스포츠, 파티등의 프로그램도 많이 있고 어학원이 아닌 UT 학생들과 1:1로 언어 및 문화 교류를 할 수 있게 지원하는 프로그램도 있습니다. 또한 주말에 외국인 학생들을 대상으로 한 여행 프로그램도 있다고 하니 외국인 친구들을 만들 수 있는 계기가 굉장히 많고 제가 UT를 선택한 가장 큰 이유이기도 합니다. 이곳에 아는 사람이 많다면 모르겠지만 어학연수를 온 대부분의 사람들은 그렇지 못하기 때문에 새로운 친구들의 중요성이 언어 뿐 아니라 생활과 적응에도 매우 큰 부분을 차지합니다.
숙박의 경우 오래된 곳들도 많고 가격이 싼편이 아니지만 처음에 한,두달 기숙사나 학교에서 연계해 주는 곳에서 지내며 적응하고 따로 알아보면 다운타운에서 조금만 벗어나도 상대적으로 저렴하고 시설 좋은 집들도 많이 있습니다.
또한 UT는 3~4만명의 학생들이 있으며 그만큼 많은 외국인 학생들이 있어 외국인 학생들을 관리하는 인터네셔널 센터가 따로 있습니다. 그들은 생활적인 면이나 적응, 비자, 의료등 중요한 부분을 지원해 줍니다. 또한 UT어학원을 다니게 되면 UT의 학생번호를 발급받을 수 있는데 헬스장, 도서관, 볼링장, 놀이시설등(앞서말한 버스포함)을 UT의 학생들과 동등하게 이용할 수 있습니다. 이는 작은 사설 어학원에서는 결코 받기 힘든 혜택이 아닌가 생각됩니다. 심지어 어학원 등록금도 사설 어학원보다 약간 쌉니다.
커리큘럼은 아직 수업을 듣지 않아서 잘 모르겠지만 워낙 유명한 교육기관이니 잘 짜여져 있을거라 생각했고 UT에 다니는 대학생들과 석,박사 과정을 공부하고 있는 한국분들이 사설어학원과 UT어학원을 모두 경험해 보셨는데 듣기로는 수업의 퀄리티도 매우 좋다고 추천들을 많이 해주셨습니다. 시간표를 보니 그러한 것들이 조금 느껴졌습니다. 제가 다닌 사설 어학원은 듣기,말하기,쓰기, 읽기, 문법등으로 과목이 나누어져 있는데 매일 2교시까지는 한 성생님이 읽기,쓰기, 3~4교시는 다른 선생님이 문법, 말하기, 듣기를 공부합니다. 책도 상당히 많아 남자인 제가 매도 가방이 매우 무거워 힘들정도인데 한 선생님이 몇가지를 가르치다 보니 이거했다 저거했다 해서 조금 정신이 없었습니다. 또한 매일 모든 과목을 나누어 공부하니 매일 모든과목의 과제를 해야합니다.
반면 UT의 시간표를 보니 아침 9시부터 (사설은 8시 30분부터였습니다.) 월,수,금 1교시는 쓰기, 2교시는 문법, 점심시간 1시간 반 이후 졸릴 때쯤 오후 3교시는 리스닝과 스피킹을 공부합니다. 그리고 화,목은 오전에는 수업이 없고(개인적으로 이부분이 마음에 듭니다.) 오후 1시~3시반까지 리딩과 토론 수업이 있습니다. 결과적으로 일주일에 7일중 3일만 아침 일찍 일어나면 되는 것이고 그날 공부할 책들만 챙기면 되기 때문에 상대적으로 가방이 가벼워 집니다. 가방이 가벼워 진다는것은 직접 느껴보면 상당히 큰 메리트 입니다. 저는 다행이 차를 가지고 다녔지만 가끔 학교 끝나고 친구들과 뭐라도 먹으러 갈때면 무거운 가방때문에 엄청 힘들고 짜증 났었습니다. (더운 날씨가 한몫 거들어 줍니다.) 제가 다니던 사설 어학원은 일정하게 8시 30분~12시 30분까지 수업이였는데 오후 시간이 많아 좋을것 같았지만 제가 잘 활용을 못했는지 집에와서 공부하려다 낮잠자고 딴짓하며 무의미하게 흘려 보내는 시간이 많았습니다. 그래서 오후까지 수업을 하는 부분도 개인적으로는 마음에 듭니다. 쉬는 시간도 30분, 점심시간 1시간 반으로 길기 때문에 어학원에서 틈틈히 과제를 하면 집까지 과제를 안가지고 올 수도 있겠다는 생각도 듭니다. 과제는 학생들 공통적으로 내주기 때문에 집에와서 공부를 더 하고자 하면 개인적으로 부족한 부분을 공부할 수 있을것 같습니다.
낯선 나라의 도시에 한국사람이 너무 없으면 또 너무 외로울 수 있는 부작용이 있는데 오스틴은 정말 적당히 한국분들이 계십니다. 한국 식당도 많지는 않지만 조금은 있고 한국 마켓도 있어 한국음식을 먹기 크게 어렵지 않고 한국교회나 커뮤니티들이 있어 적응과 생활적인 부분에서 의지하고 도움을 받을 수 있는 좋은 분들도 많이 계십니다.
만약 텍사스로 오실 계획이 있다면 휴스턴은 날시가 너무 습한것 같은 느낌이 있고 댈라스는 잘 정돈된 대도시이고 한국사람도 많이 살고 있으니 참고하시는게 좋을것 같습니다. 오스틴은 크지 않지만 오스틴만의 매력적인 문화가 있고 학생들이 많다보니 젊음이 느껴지는 도시 입니다.
그리고 만약 오스틴으로 오겠다고 생각하시면 당연히 UT를 추천 드립니다. 워낙 많은 유학생들이 오기 때문에 도시와, 자연, 놀이문화등이 잘 조화를 이루고 있어 너무 심심하지 않게 공부하면서 공부에도 집중할 수 있는 환경이 잘 조성되어 있는것 같습니다.
막상 오시면 어학뿐 아니라 학교도 더 다니며 공부도 더 하고 싶고 취업까지 생각하실 수 있습니다. 사람마다 다르겠지만 실제로 이곳에서 보면 그렇게 해서 영주권 취득까지 이어지는 경우도 적지 않은것 같습니다. 여튼 어디를 가시던 해외 생활은 조금 무리를 해서라도 꼭 경험해 보시길 추천드리고 싶습니다.
