Accommodation
A "homestay" is a cultural exchange in which a person visiting or temporarily staying in another country lives with a family in the host country. Homestays involve relationships between people and should not be confused with a boarding-house or hotel experience in which a person only rents a room. While students pay their own expenses for room and board, the purpose of an INTERLINK homestay is not just to provide a place to stay but to create an enriching learning experience for both the student and the host family. There are homestays for short periods (one night or a weekend) and for longer times (a vacation period, a term, several terms).
Homestays Homestays provide a great opportunity to practice the English language and to learn about American culture. Students live with a family and have a private bedroom with either a private or shared bathroom. The current cost is $920 per month. This includes 16 meals per week and transportation. There is also a $200 non-refundable placement fee. There is a limited number of host families. Applications should be submitted at least one month prior to arrival. Placements are given in the order applications/fees are received. The commitment is for one 9-week term, but the contract can be extended for additional terms.
On-Campus Housing Living in a residence hall provides great opportunities for learning English and meeting people. Each room is shared by two students and is fully furnished, including a sink. All rooms have wireless internet service and cable television hook-up. Students have access to lounges, a recreation room, a kitchen, and a coin-operated laundry. More information about residence hall living is available on the Valpo website. Students need to complete a form committing to living in the residence hall for at least one 9-week term. The cost is $1665 per 9-week term. Students who are under 21 years of age must also pay $533 towards food per 9-week term.
Apartments Rental apartments are available within walking distance of campus. Rents typically range from about $600 to $800 per month depending on the type/size of the apartment. These apartments are not furnished and require a one year lease. You can find a list of Valparaiso Apartments at apartments.com, zumperand Uloop. The Uptown East Apartments are a recognized provider of University off-campus housing for Graduate and Law students. These apartments include furniture, internet, utilities, fitness center, etc. The rent per month ranges from $775/$825 for a shared apartment to $950 for a one bedroom apartment.
