The UBC English Language Institute (UBC ELI) opened in 1969, and welcomes thousands of international students through its doors every year. As a UBC ELI student, you learn from ESL instructors who are leaders in the field of language education. You also have access to many of the outstanding resources that UBC offers. The UBC ELI building is located at the centre of the UBC campus, and features bright and comfortable classrooms and a Student Study Centre (SSC). The Student Study Centre includes multimedia labs with free Internet and email access. We can arrange your accommodation in a campus dormitory during the summer months or in Homestay (living with a local Canadian family) year round.You will be surrounded by other students with interests and ambitions that match your own – students who are as independent, adventurous and creative as you are. Residence life provides a safe, diverse, and well-maintained environment that complements and supports the academic mission of the University. UBC creates a dynamic living and learning experience that promotes and inspires individuals to become empowered community members. There are number of options for first year students or upper classmen. Students can choose to live in a dorm or homestay.
Surrounding Area
The Vancouver campus is located at Point Grey, a twenty minute drive from downtown Vancouver. It is near several beaches and has North Shore mountains. The 7.63Km Pacific Spirit Regional Park serves as a green belt between the campus and the city. Buildings on the Vancouver campus currently occupy 1,091,997m gross, located on 1.7Km of maintained land. The campus street plan is mostly in a grid of malls (for driving and pedestrian only). Lower Mall and West Mall are in the southwestern part of the peninsula, with Main, East, and Wesbrook Malls northeast of them. The campus is home to numerous gardens. The UBC Botanical Gardenand Centre for Plan Research, the first UBC department, holds a collection of over 8000 different kinds of plants used for research, conservation and education.
Facilities
The heart of student activity at UBC Vancouver is the centrally located Student Union Building, which houses offices of many clubs, half a dozen restaurants and cafes, a pit a nightclub, the inexpensive 425 seat Norman Bouchard Memorial Theatre, several shops and post office. The majority of the outlets and shops in the SUB are run by AMS, however the addition of major corporate outlets in recent years by UBC Food Services has generated some controversy. The SUB Art Gallery contains mostly students' work. The UBC Bookstore has two locations on the Vancouver campus, the main store at 6200 University Boulevard, and one at the Sauder School of Business. There are also stores at the Okanagan and Robson Squre campuses. The Bookstore provides a range of products and services.
Activity
Vancouver has numerous popular parks all around, especially Stanley Park is one of the most beautiful park in Vancouver to enjoy sunshine. Also Whistler worldwide ski resort to enjoy Winter sports.

저는 캐나다 밴쿠버에 있는 UBC 언어과정(ELI)를 선택했어요. 26년3월부터 공무원 휴직이라 1년을 등록해야했고 많은 유학원을 알아보았는데 여기가 가장 빠르게 도와주어 신청하게되었습니다. 또한 외국에서 살게 될 가능성을 염두에 두고 영어 레벨을 업그레이드하길 원했고, 아무래도 UBC는 자타공인 밴쿠버에서 가장 좋은 학교니까요.
2) 학교 및 학업 경험
국적비율은 어떤가요? 프로그램은 어떤가요?
디스커버리 과정을 원했는데, 테스트 결과 좀더 고급영어를 배우는 EAP 과정을 수강할 것을 권유받았습니다. EAP 과정이 디스커버리 과정보다 조금 어렵다고 알고 있습니다. 한국, 일본, 중국, 칠레에서 온 친구들이 섞여 있고, 일본, 한국, 중국 국적 순으로 많습니다. 일본은 와세다대에서 협업 프로그램을 운영하는 것 같았습니다. EAP는 UBC 학부 과정 입학을 염두에 두고 운영하는 과정인만큼 아카데믹하고 포멀한 영어 학습에 중점을 두고 있고 숙제도 많습니다. 수업은 월요일부터 목요일까지 주 4일입니다. 학생들 간에 분위기도 좋고 선생님들도 열정적이고 열심히 가르치세요. 반드시 준비할 것은 긍정적인 생각과 성실함이겠네요.

물가는 비쌉니다. UBC가 위치하는 British Columbia는 Bring Cash라는 우스갯소리가 있습니다. 어학원에서 매 금요일마다 액티비티를 마련하는 것 같고, 참석은 자율입니다. 밴쿠버에 익숙하지 않다면 액티비티를 이용해 이 지역에 익숙해질 수 있을 것 같습니다.
4) 해외교육문화원 이용 경험
등록 절차가 낯설고 출국수속을 준비할 시간이 충분하지 않아 이곳을 통해 준비했는데 깔끔하게 처리해주셔서 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 수수료도 저렴하고요. 이곳 추천합니다.캐나다Study permit 도 빠르게 나왔습니다. 숙소는 따로 구했기때문에 별로로 드릴 말씀은 없습니다만 UBC는 홈스테이만 제공합니다.
5) 캐나다 입국때 학생비자를 받으신 상황을 한번 설명해주시겠스비까?
해외교육문화원을 통해 준비하면서 가장 도움이 되었던 점은 무엇인가요?
유학원에서 알려주신 대로만 간단히 챙겨 제출하면 되었고 별다른 질문도 없이 학생비자 발급 받았습니다. 서류만 잘 챙겨온다면 염려할 일은 아무것도 없습니다. 해외교육문화원을 통해 가장 도움이 되었던 것은 시간과 에너지 절약이었고 알아서 해주시니 신경쓸 것이 거의 없어 편했다는 것입니다.
1) 유학을 결심한 이유
평소 영어를 더 제대로 공부해 보고 싶었고, 한국에서 영어를 배우는 것보다 실제로 영어를 사용하는 환경에서 생활하면 실력이 더 빠르게 늘 수 있을 것 같아 어학연수를 결심했습니다. 특히 영어로 직접 대화하면서 말하기에 대한 두려움을 줄이고, 다양한 문화권의 사람들과 소통해 보고 싶었습니다.
왜 (이 학교 또는 나라를) 선택했나요?
캐나다를 선택한 이유는 여러 국적의 사람들이 함께 살아가는 다문화 국가이기 때문에 영어를 배우면서 다양한 문화를 경험할 수 있다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 그 중에서도 밴쿠버는 자연환경이 아름답고 비교적 생활하기 편리하며, 다양한 나라에서 온 학생들을 만날 수 있다는 점이 좋았습니다. 또한 UBC는 잘 알려진 학교이고 캠퍼스 환경과 교육 프로그램이 체계적이라고 생각해 선택하게 되었습니다.
2) 학교 및 학업 경험 ?학교 생활과 수업 방식, 참가인원, 국적비율은 어땠나요?
학교에서는 단순히 문법이나 단어를 외우는 수업보다 발표, 토론, 에세이 작성, 팀 프로젝트처럼 학생들이 직접 참여하는 활동이 많았습니다.
한 반에는 약 30명 정도의 학생이 있었고, 한국 뿐만 아니라 일본, 브라질, 대만 등 여러 나라에서 온 학생들이 함께 공부했습니다. 특정 국적의 학생만 많은 분위기 아니라 다양한 배경을 가진 학생들과 이야기할 기회가 많아서 좋았습니다.
수업에서는 자신의 의견을 분명하게 표현하는 것이 중요했습니다. 정답을 맞히는 것보다 왜 그렇게 생각하는지 설명하고, 다른 학생의 의견을 듣는 과정이 많았다는 점이 한국의 수업과 가장 다르게 느껴졌습니다.
3)숙소
저는 기숙사가 아니라 홈스테이에서 생활했습니다. 홈스테이를 하면서 현지 가정의 생활 방식과 문화를 가까이에서 경험할 수 있었고, 집에서도 영어를 사용할 기회가 있다는 점이 좋았습니다.
식사는 홈스테이 가정마다 차이가 있을 수 있지만, 저의 경우에는 아침, 점심, 저녁을 제공받았습니다. 처음에는 음식이나 생활 방식이 한국과 달라 적응이 필요했지만, 불편한 점이나 귀가 시간 등을 미리 이야기하면 서로 맞춰 갈 수 있었습니다. 홈스테이를 선택할 때는 학교까지 걸리는 시간, 대중교통 이용 방법, 식사 제공 범위와 집의 규칙을 미리 확인하는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다.

밴쿠버는 외식비와 생활비가 비싼 편이기 때문에 매일 밖에서 사 먹기보다는 마트에서 장을 보거나 간단한 음식을 준비하는 것이 생활비를 절약하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 교통카드를 이용하면 버스와 스카이 트레인을 편리하게 이용할 수 있기 때문에 숙소를 정할 때는 거리 뿐만 아니라 환승 횟수와 실제 통학 시간도 확인하는 것이 좋습니다.
친구를 사귀기 위해서는 먼저 인사를 하고 수업이나 학교 활동에 적극적으로 참여하는 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 영어가 틀릴까 봐 걱정하지 말고, 대부분의 학생도 영어를 배우기 위해 온 사람들이기 때문에 완벽하게 말해야 한다는 부담을 가질 필요 없습니다. 작은 대화라도 먼저 시작하면 생각보다 자연스럽게 친해질 수 있습니다.
유학을 준비하는 분들에게는 출국 전에 영어를 완벽하게 만들어야 한다는 부담을 갖기보다, 실수하더라도 직접 말해 보려는 태도를 준비하라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 실제 생활에서는 문법을 완벽하게 사용하는 것보다 자신의 생각을 표현하고 상대방과 계속 소통하려는 자세가 더 중요했습니다.
