All new students take a placement test on their first day to determine which classes they will be in. Students who successfully complete level six of the EAP or EBIS course can enrol at Flinders University without taking the IELTS or TOEFL test.

The Flinders University of South Australia was founded in 1966. It is a modern, progressive university with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The following overview will help you choose the best course for your goals. However, after you begin the IELI program, it is possible to change to another IELI course. IELI courses do not focus on test preparation, but some test practice is included ineach course. (22 hours of required classes, 3 hours of elective classes). The course offers year-round, 5 weeks terms.
The curriculum of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) is based on the belief that students need to concentrate on different skill areas at different levels of language learning. Students concentrate on listening and speaking for daily communication at the beginning levels. Intermediate levels focus on reading and writing fluency as well as more formal speaking and listening situations. The advanced levels focus on accuracy and appropriateness of speech and written communication as well as the specific language needed for their business or academic purposes. All new students will be tested on the first day of the session. According to the test results, students will be placed in Listening, Speaking and Reading and Writing classes according to their ability in each skill area. For example, one student may place in Level 3 Reading & Writing, Level 2 in Speaking and Level 3 in Listening. This placement policy helps ensure that students are challenged in their areas of strength, and given additional help in their areas of weakness. Promotion to the next level is determined by the student’s daily work as well as by final assessment. As with placement, students are promoted according to their progress in each skill area. To encourage progress in students’ weak skill areas, elective classes which give additional practice in a particular area are often suggested. Learning Skills Throughout the curriculum, students are introduced to various language learning strategies and helped to develop learning strategies that work for them. Individual and group strategies are practiced which will help students continue their learning after their course is completed. For example, in listening classes, students are introduced to methods of using tapes, videos and language lab facilities for self-study. Additional strategies for vocabulary acquisition and speaking practice are suggested for students. Study groups are actively encouraged. In reading and writing classes, students learn ways to improve fluency and vocabulary through a regular habit of free reading, journal writing and to improve word and sentence structure through topic area reading and creation of “topic grids”.
For the succesfully completing level 1-3, you are able to study on your purpose of learning English. You can choose 4 option of study.
English for Academic Preparation (General English Level 4+) This course is for students who want to enter degree programs at Flinders University or another tertiary institution. Students who successfully complete this course have fulfilled the English proficiency requirements for Flinders University. They do not need to submit an IELTS or TOEFL score but must meet all other university admission requirements. Conditional letters of acceptance for academic admission can be issued to qualified students choosing this course.
English for Academic Experience (General English Level 3+) This course is for students who want to study English and take some university classes, but do not want to complete a university degree in Australia. Students will study English 10 to 12 hours per week as well as enroll in one of a pre-selected list of Flinders University topics. Students will receive transferable credit for their course at Flinders. Students with a TOEFL of 530 (Computer-based score of 197) or 5.5 on the IELTS (minimum of 5.5 in writing), can enter this course directly. Students must enter this course at the beginning of the university semesters (end of February or end of July) to fit the university semester. Upon successful completion of the first semester, students may enroll at Flinders University as fulltime study abroad students. Students who intend to complete a university degree at Flinders University can take this course only with the permission of the IELI Director.
English for Business and IT Studies (General English Level 6+) This course is for students who are planning to study Business or Information Technology topics at University. The course helps students improve their English proficiency and prepares them for the academic tasks which are common in business, commerce, and IT topics in Australian universities. Tasks include note-taking, group projects, case studies reports, as well as academic reading and writing tasks with a business focus. As part of the EBIS course, students can opt to take English for Work stream. This option includes part academic business & IT study and part English for work study, which includes general and professional business English and Australian work culture
English for Health Studies (General English Level 6+) This is our new academic pathway program for students going into health related courses at university (e.g. Nursing, Paramedics etc). Academic lectures, documentary films, interviews, model professional interactions and correspondence, articles and textbook case studies on health related issues are some of the content of the course. The student will learn Summary, essay and study reports, listening and note-taking, reading comprehension, formal presentation and professional interaction in healthcare settings. Health Studies is available from IELI Level 6 and goes up to proficiency plus level. Students are required to take the IELI English placement test on the first day of the course. If they do not test into Level 6 when they commence, then students study General English (Level 1-3), then Academic English (Level 4-5), and then Health Studies (Level 6+). The Health Studies curriculum is also designed to help students reach the required IELTS 6.5 level for Nursing Conversion courses.
English for Health + OET Preparation: This is our new course for students who are preparing to work in Australia in health related fields (including preparation for the OET test). This course is also offered from IELI Level 6 and goes up to proficiency plus level. However, students who have a prior degree or proof of work experience in Australia plus a current IELTS result of 6.5 with no bands below 6 will be admitted straight into the Health + OET course, without the need to take the IELI English Placement Test on the first day of the course. Students who enrol part-time in the Health + OET would not meet the study requirements of a student visa and no CoE would be issued. The student will learn Professional speaking and writing formats in health fields, written articles and case study reports, reading comprehension and listening skills on health care topics, competence in completing OET exam tasks. Documentary films, interviews, model professional interactions and correspondence, articles and case studies on health related issues, OET practice materials are some of the content of the course.

IELI Homestay Program The IELI homestay program seeks to provide a homestay program which benefits both local families and IELI students. The focus of the program will be to provide a safe, friendly and healthful environment for IELI students, which will enhance their experience of living and studying in Australia and will provide a positive impression of Australian family life. The homestay program also recognises that homestay arrangements require adjustments on the part of both families and students. The program seeks to promote the development of cross-cultural communication skills, conflict resolution skills, and to foster appreciation for the diversity of cultures and backgrounds on the part of staff, families and students.
Student Hostel Accommodation Most student accommodation is single bedroom, with a limited number of share rooms. Each bedroom is fully furnished with access to a shared bathroom, kitchen, laundry, lunge and recreational facilities. Utilities are usually included in the weekly rent. Students are responsible for costs associated with telelphone and internet access if they choose to connect.

Surrounding Area
The city of Adelaide is an excellent place to live. Although it is a major City with city entertainment and shopping, the atmosphere is very friendly and comfortable. Public transport conveniently allows students to enjoy both the city centre and the famous Australian beaches & open spaces easily. In addition, studying in Adelaide provides good value for money. Adelaide has one of the lowest living costs of any Australian state capital.
Facilities
Flinders University campus includes student cafeteria, coffee shop, book shop, hairdresser, travel agent, laundromat, tavern, sports facility, health centre and language laboratory. IELI students have access to all campus facilities and can attend campus concerts and other activities.
Bank : The National Australia Bank (NAB) has a branch located on campus. Pharmacy : A pharmacy is located on campus which provides a full service. It also has photographic services. Post Office : The campus post office will provide most postal services and also offers other services such as bill paying facilities and the sale of public transport tickets. Library : Students can use the Flinders University libraries. The libraries also offer computers with free internet service and offer newspapers from many parts of the world. Language Laboratory : The Flinders University language laboratory has 40 CD Rom computers with language learning programs. IELI students can use the lab which includes a variety of ESL programs and activities. IELI updates listening materials each session to ensure the students have challenging activities throughout their stay.

I took a year of IELI in Flinders University in Australia. IELI
is highly recommended for those who only want to focus on English. IELI a year
course has a mandatory class hour of 22, optional class of 3 hours, and there
is a class 5 days a week. You get to take class in English, and for each
section, you must take a level test and be replaced. I was quite good at reading
and writing, so I got level 3, but I was weak in the listening. It was really
efficient to have classes divided for each level. Teachers recommend an
effective studying style, and measure students’ abilities thoroughly. I was
really worried about listening, and the teachers there helped me carefully. After
a year, I was even good enough to understand daily news on the television. The
school is really big and beautiful. It gives you an impression of ‘wow! I get
to study in a place like this?’. Furthermore, where I stayed had relatively low
inflation. The city itself is also safe and feels comfortable. The school also
provides many after school activities, such as sports, travelling, sightseeing
etc. My English improved a lot and my attitudes changed positively too. I
highly recommend Flinders University in Australia.
저는 플린더스대학 내 영어아카데미(IELI)에서 1년 코스를 마치고 온 학생입니다. IELI는 영어 공부만이 목적인 어학연수를 희망하는 학생들에게는 정말 좋은 곳이라고 생각해요. IELI 1년 코스는 필수과목22시간, 선택과목 3시간으로 구성되어있고, 수업은 5주 학기에요. 매일매일 영어수업을 듣게되고, 각 과목마다 레벨테스트를 치루고 실력에 맞는 반으로 배정되요. 저는 읽기나 쓰기는 레벨 3을 받았는데 듣기가 부족해서 2반으로 들어갔어요. 사람마다 부족한 부분이나 자신있는 부분이 다르기 때문에 과목별로 반을 배치하는 것은 정말 좋았어요. 그리고 각자의 실력을 선생님들이 측정하고 개선방법을 알려주기도 하고 학생의 성향에 맞는 공부방법을 제공해 주세요. 저는 듣기가 너무 약해서 걱정이었는데, 듣기 실력을 높히기 위해서 선생님들이 굉장히 애써주셨어요. 1년만에 저는 웬만한 tv뉴스를 알아들을정도로 영어 실력이 늘었어요. 학교에 대해서 말씀드리자면 학교는 정말 크고 멋있어요. 아 내가 이런곳에서 공부를 하다니..라는 생각이 계속 들정도에요. 애들레이드는 호주에서도 생활비가 가장 저렴하다고해요. 그리고 도시가 굉장히 조용하고 따뜻한 기분이 들어요. 그래서 살기에도 정말 좋구요. 학교에서는 여가활동도 많이 제공해주는데 스포츠활동도 많이 하게되고, 박물관이나 시내로 관광을 가기도해요. 이곳에 있으면서 영어실력도 늘었지만 마음에 여유가 많이 생긴 것 같아요. 미국이나 영국같은 국가도 좋지만 저는 호주, 플린더스대학 정말 추천드려요.
